To provide one year’s financial support to up to four promising candidates undertaking an AUT Master of Philosophy — Applied Biostatistics (thesis only). This is an opportunity to gain practical experience in a health research group with senior biostatistical supervision while undertaking your master’s.

Selection criteria
The scholarships are awarded on academic merit and a demonstrated potential to excel as a biostatistician in an applied setting.
• Applicants may be New Zealand citizens, New Zealand permanent residents, or international students.
Applicants must meet the normal admission criteria to the MPhil programme. In order to be admitted to the Master of Philosophy an applicant must have completed one of the following with the equivalent of a B grade average or higher in final year papers in statistics, biostatistics, mathematics or a related quantitative discipline:
- A four-year bachelor’s degree; or,
- A bachelor’s honours degree; or,
- A bachelor’s degree and a postgraduate diploma; or,
- A bachelor’s degree and at least three years of experience relevant to
the proposed programme of research.
• Preference will be given to those with an undergraduate qualifying degree in statistics or biostatistics, mathematics, or related quantitative discipline. Additional study or experience in a health-related area is preferred but not essential.
• Applicants must be prepared to commit full-time to the MPhil programme.
Amount and type of award
A partnership scholarship jointly supported by Middlemore Clinical Trials and AUT Department of Biostatistics and Epidemiology. The scholarship covers the following:
• Annual payment of full tuition fees at the domestic rate
• An annual stipend of NZ$10,000 per year.

The following documents must be submitted to the Scholarships Office by 4.00pm on the closing date:
• A completed AUT Scholarship application form
• Academic transcript(s) for any previous tertiary study completed at a university other than AUT.
• Two referee’s reports forwarded by the closing date directly and confidentially to the Scholarships Office by the referee. Applicants may not submit referee’s reports directly. References may be submitted by email providing they are sent from the referee’s institutional email address. Please select referees who are able to comment on your suitability for this scholarship.
• A Short Career Statement indicating in no more than 150 words:
- How you developed your current postgraduate and research interests.
- Why you selected this course of study.
- How support from this Scholarship might assist in furthering your career in biostatistics.
